Salang tunnel
then and now. The tunnel reaches
an
altitude of about 3,400 m and is 2.6 km long.
On November 3, 1982 two soviet military convoys
driven from different sides of Salang
tunnel collided
in the middle of the tunnel and created a traffic
jam. 64 soviet soldiers and 112 afghans were killed
by carbon monoxide
emitted by idling engines.
221st Battalion lost 9 men (1 officer and 8 soldiers)
in that accident. After that accident, only one way
traffic was permitted for odd and even dates.
North side of Salang pass - one mile before the tunnel. It is very steep elevation with sharp turns.
There was a high risk to overheat an engine.
